Chapter Eleven
Anna awoke with a start. It took a moment for her to realize where she was, to calm herself listening to the steady breathing of the man beside her. She was alert for the noise that had awakened her from solid sleep, but there was only the stamping and snuffling of the horses in their stalls beneath them.
The loft of the barn was dark, but a slice of night sky was clearly visible through the open hay door. In the soft light she studied Jeremyâs profile. He was handsome. That pleased her, but there were so many other things about him that touched her heart. He was a wonderful lover, but it was the way he looked at her more than the way he touched her that ignited her passions.
Whatever else happened between them, Anna knew that for one night they had been everything to each other. There had been no room for anything except each other. When sheâd planned her trip to Kerrville, this was not the outcome sheâd expected. Jeremy Masterson, as a person, had always been a fantasy to her. She remembered something her grandfather had told herâthat fate has changed the wind when dreams become solid. Whether knowing the real Jeremy was good or bad, the experience would change her life.
As she stared at him, Jeremy opened his eyes. A lazy smile touched the corners of his lips and he reached for her. âI was afraid Iâd dreamed you,â he said.
Anna smiled despite the chill his words sent over her. âWeâve been asleep for a while.â
The smile slowly faded, replaced by a frown. âIâll call Ellie and see if she got in touch with Lem. If she didnât, Iâm thinking I should ride back toward the posse and simply give myself up. Iâll get a chance to get in front of the cameras and tell the truth.â
âSounds good. What if some trigger-happy cowboy shoots you first?â
âDo you think thatâs really likely?â
âIf I based an answer on how things should be, Iâd say no. Based on whatâs happened in the last three days, Iâd say I wouldnât be surprised if theyâve resurrected Wyatt Earp and have him on our trail.â
Jeremyâs chuckle was soft. âYou know, I might have to steal that line of dialogue.â
âBe my guest,â Anna said, basking in the warmth that seemed to cocoon them.
Jeremy found his clothes and began dressing. Anna watched him, aware that he favored his injured leg only slightly. He was a tough man.
When he was dressed, he picked up her clothes and offered them to her. Anna took them and stood, shedding the clean horse blanket theyâd used as a cover. The admiration in his eyes as he watched her dress was better than any words he might have said.
âWhen this is over,â Jeremy finally said, âI want your word that youâll spend some time with me.â The request took Anna by surprise. âWho knows what will happen when this is over.â
âWeâll get it straight. Just tell me that youâll give me a chance to get to know you, Anna.
